In 1997 Mound Prairie Mutual expanded the fire extinguisher program. At present we are heavily subsidizing the sale of fire extinguisher to our insured members. Our experience has been that if you have an extinguisher handy in the first moments on an out of control fire, many small fires can be prevented from becoming major losses.
The extinguishers we sell are the dry chemical type ABC. These extinguishers use a fine dry powder which smothers the flames and deprives the fire of oxygen and can be used on most types of fires.

You should have
extinguishers in the following areas |
w In the House:
one five pound extinguisher in the kitchen, one in the basement, and one
in the garage. The kitchen is a frequent site for fires to start.
w In the Farm Shop:
keep at least one ten pound extinguisher and if possible two. One should be
near the door so you can get at it quickly from inside or outside. Place
the second one at or near the center of the shop. One should be kept handy
whenever using a welder or cutting torch.
w In your Vehicles:
to use on engine fires or as a backup for machinery fires.
w On the Tractor:
a five or ten pound extinguisher should be mounted where the driver can
easily reach the extinguisher.
w On the combine:
two five or ten pound extinguishers should be mounted, one in the cab and
one near the engine compartment. We see several combine fires each year.
extinquishers, when used, help reduce damages and downtime.
wAn extinguisher should be
mounted on all self-propelled farm equipment.
